Mike Francis Mwakatundu, known professionally as Mike Tee (also nicknamed Mnyalu), is a cornerstone of the Tanzanian music industry and a primary architect of the Bongo Flava genre. Born on January 27, 1978, in Iringa, he was one of the first artists to successfully bring the sound of the Southern Highlands to the national stage in Dar es Salaam. His musical journey began in the early 1990s, where he initially experimented with English rap before transitioning into the Swahili lyricism that would eventually define his career and the Tanzanian hip-hop identity.
Mike Tee’s rise to superstardom was cemented in the early 2000s with the release of the massive hit "Nyaluland," featuring Lady JayDee. The track served as an anthem for his home region and established him as a premier storyteller. He followed this success with a string of classic albums, including Sintobadilika (2004) and Je Utanipenda? (2004), which featured timeless collaborations with artists like Q-Chief and Juma Nature. His smooth, rhythmic delivery and ability to blend hard-hitting rap with melodic choruses made him a favorite across East Africa.
Mike Tee’s extensive musical catalog is officially managed and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment East Africa. This partnership, stemming from an exclusive licensing deal with the legendary Bongo Records, has ensured that his "old-school" hits are digitally remastered and accessible on global streaming platforms.
